Apostle Cephas

Apostle

Commemorated January 4 · March 30 · December 8

The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Cephas is numbered among the Seventy Apostles , and was bishop of Iconium or Colophon, Pamphylia. It is assumed that he is the one who is mentioned by the Apostle Paul ( 1 Cor. 15:5).
The Church remembers St. Cephas on March 30 with, Apostles Sosthenes , Apollos , Caesar , and Epaphroditus ; and on December 8 with the same apostles and Onesiphorus .
Apostles of the 70 were chosen and sent by the Lord Jesus Christ himself to preach. They were chosen some time after the selection of the Twelve Apostles ( Luke 10:1-24). All seventy are commemorated by the Church on January 4 .
The name "Cephas" is Aramaic for "Peter."

Troparion

O holy apostle Cephas, entreat the Merciful God that He may grant the remission of sins to our souls.

Kontakion

As a most bright star the church hath for ever acquired thee, O apostle Cephas, being enlightened with the grant of a multitude of thy miracles wherefore we call unto Christ: Save, O Greatly-merciful, those who in faith honour the memory of Thine apostle.
