Evangelicus of Tomis

Hieromartyr

Commemorated July 7 · July 8

The holy, glorious right-victorious Hieromartyr Evangelicus of Tomis (also Evangelus ) is the first-known bishop of Tomis, a Greek city in Scythia Minor, a region evangelized in the first century by the Apostle Andrew . Tomis is now known as Constanţa, the largest city on the Black Sea coast of Dobrogea, Romania.
St. Evangelicus was bishop of Tomis from about 290 to 300 and was renowned for converting many still-pagan Dacians and Scythians to the Christian faith. He was mentioned in the Act of Martyrdom of Sts. Epictetus the Priest and Astion the Monk , both martyred on July 8 in Halmyris (modern Dunavăţ). St. Astion's parents were converted by the Priest Bonosus and baptized by Bishop Evangelicus in Halmyris 14 days after their son's martyrdom.
St. Evangelicus is believed to have been martyred during the persecution of Diocletian . His feast day is July 7 .

Troparion

Having been a participant of the character and a successor of the apostles on the throne, thou, O God-inspired one, didst find work in coming into visions; whilst therefore rightly dividing the word of truth, for the sake of the faith didst thou suffer even unto the shedding of thy blood. O hieromartyr Evangelicus, intercede before Christ the God that our souls may be saved.

Kontakion

Having lived piously among hierarchs and having gone through the path of martyrdom, thou, O God-wise one, hast extinguished the sacrifices of idols and wast a protector unto thy flock. Wherefore, in honouring thee, in our hearts we cry out unto thee: Do ever deliver us from dangers through thine intercessions, O Evangelicus, our father.
