Martyr Eleutherius of Constantinople (4th c.)

Commemorated August 4

The Holy Martyr Eleutherius served as the cubicularius (bed-chamberlain) at the court of the emperor Maximian Hercules (284-305). When he accepted Christianity, he then settled on a country estate, and built a church at his home. One of the servants reported to the emperor, that Eleutherius had become a Christian. The emperor ordered the saint to offer pagan sacrifice. The saint refused and for this he was beheaded. The relics of Saint Eleutherius were situated at Constantinople, and afterwards transferred to Italy, in the city of Theato.

Troparion

Thy martyr, O Lord, Eleutherius, through his suffering, an incorruptible crown did obtain from Thee, our God; for, rejoicing in Thy strength, he laid low his tormentors and did beat off impotent affronts of the demons also; at his intercessions save our souls.

Kontakion

Thou hast appeared as a bright star, uninviting for the world, but a sun announcing Christ with thy rays, O martyr Eleutherius; all the enchantment hast thou extinguished and grantest unto us light, supplicating incessantly for us all.
