New Martyr Theophanes at Constantinople (1559)

Commemorated June 8

In his youth he was enticed into Islam, but he soon repented and accepted monasticism. Wishing to redeem his denial through blood, he, when he was in Constantinople, confessed himself a Christian. For that reason the Turks seized him and after the cruelest torture they burnt him on bed of iron spikes (iron lattice), in the year 1559.

Troparion

Thy martyr, O Lord, Theophanes, through his suffering, an incorruptible crown did obtain from Thee, our God; for, rejoicing in Thy strength, he laid low his tormentors and did beat off impotent affronts of the demons also; at his intercessions save our souls.

Kontakion

Thou hast appeared as a bright star, uninviting for the world, but a sun announcing Christ with thy rays, O martyr Theophanes; all the enchantment hast thou extinguished and grantest unto us light, supplicating incessantly for us all.
