Sophronios of Cyprus
Hierarch
Commemorated December 9
Our father among the saints Sophronius or Sophronios, Archbishop of Cyprus , was born into a Christian family on Cyprus. His memory is commemorated on December 9 .
He lived in the 6th Century. He studied many sciences, but most of all he devoted himself to the reading of Holy Scriptures . He became so accomplished in piety and good works, that he was granted the gift of wonderworking by the Lord. Following the death of St Damian, bishop of Cyprus, St Sophronius was chosen to replace him. As bishop, he proved himself a true father to his flock.
Troparion
As a rule of faith and model of tenderness, and teacher of abstinence hath the reality shewn thee unto thy flock; there withal hast thou acquired by humility greatness, by poverty riches; O father hierarch Sophronios, intercede before Christ the God that our souls may be saved.
Kontakion
O divine thunder, spiritual trumpet, planter of faith and cutter off of heresies, great favourite of the Trinity, hierarch Sophronios, standing with the angels before God do ever and unceasingly pray for us all.
