Venerable Arcadius, monk, of Cyprus

Commemorated March 6

The Monk Arkadios from the time of his youth devoted himself to monastic efforts. The saint asceticised on the Island of Cyprus during the time of the emperor Constantine the Great (206-337). He was teacher of the holy Martyrs Julian the Physician and Eubolos, executed under Julian the Apostate (361-363). Bewailing the martyr's death of his students and having consigned their bodies to earth, the Monk Arkadios himself soon peacefully expired to the Lord.

Troparion

In thee, O father, was manifestly preserved what is in the image of God, for having taken up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thine own example hast taught that the flesh is to be despised as transient, but that particular care should be bestowed on the soul, as a thing immortal; wherefore, together with the angels, rejoiceth also thine, O holy Arcadius, spirit.

Kontakion

Having divinely armed thyself with the purity of thy soul and unceasing prayers firmly grasping as a spear, thou, our father Arcadius, hast pierced the armies of the demon; supplicate unceasingly for us all.
